FAQ > Class Action > Are class actions only designed to make money for lawyers?

This is the subject of much debate among the general public and within academic circles.  Since we represent plaintiffs and often seek large fee awards, we tend to focus on the positive impact that a class action can have on public policy or consumer protection.  We take the position that the federal and state governments (including regulatory agencies) are understaffed, underfunded, or otherwise uninterested in fixing some of the fraudulent activity that we see and hear about every day in the news.  Some companies will continue to rip people off until it affects their bottom line.  By filing a suit we seek to change the behavior of these companies.  Regardless of who receives the crux of that money, whether class members, a charitable institution, our firm, the idea is that the unscrupulous company will feel compelled to change its behavior.
