Last Friday, Illinois taxpayer Mark Schacht, M.D., filed suit against various individuals seeking a financial audit of the Cook County Circuit Clerk's Office. Schacht alleges that the Clerk's Office collects $200 million per year in fees from litigants, and that 15 to 23 percent of the money collected between 2001 and 2012 is unaccounted for.
The complaint refers to an "astounding discrepancy between the receipts reported and the receipts expected under operation of law."
Named as defendants in Schacht’s suit are the President of the Cook County Board, 17 Cook County Commissioners, and the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Schacht is represented by David Novoselsky of Chicago, Illinois.
